OS Map 159 (1:50 000). Ref - 499 070.

Although Sylen Lake has been in existence several years it only opened for coarse fishing in 2001. It initially began operating as a trout fishery and in fact there are still a few old-timers left that sometimes surprise the angler when they grab a floating biscuit or lump of luncheon meat. There are over 5 acres of highly-productive water on offer with attractive open banks which despite being fed by gin-clear mountain springs is usually nicely coloured from the activities of wandering packs of gluttonous carp and tench despite most of the bottom being gravelly. The banks are level grassy and except for the west side which is pretty straight twists into a series of cosy bays thus increasing the fishing area available and ensuring that elbow room is more than adequate. There are a few small bushes here and there but otherwise the bank is open and uncluttered. A peninsular extends well out from the eastern bank a popular location when the carp are on the cruise and ideal for the still-water equivalent of trotting when there’s a bit of wind. Being such a new fishery you won’t get any really big ‘uns here for a few years yet but what they lack in size they more than make up for in sheer numbers. Very large catches of carp to 10lbs (commons mirrors and others) and tench up to 5lbs are not uncommon and if you wish to delve into the mysteries of carp mentality this would be a good place to start before they get too big - and correspondingly crafty. Another two adjacent lakes intended for coarse fish are due to be excavated shortly and are expected to be opened within a year or two together with all necessary facilities - and plenty of co-operative fish.

TO GET THERE

From Llanelli town follow the B4309 north about 5 miles. At the 30mph speed signs entering the village of Cynheidre turn right go half a mile and the lake is on the right just past a hump-back bridge.
