Tactics to fish for Rainbow and other stocked Trout

Daddy Long Legs

Stillwater fishing for stocked Trout is often snubbed as being artificial since the quarry is not truly wild. However, it offers exceptional challenges – with a vast range of tactics required to fool the fish.

During the winter and early spring, the fish tend to hold rather deep. With little or no fly life, this requires the use of high-density lines and generally lures of a dark colour – although a bright mini-lure tied on a dropper can attract the fish to subtle alternatives fished elsewhere on the cast.

As the season progresses through late spring to summer, fly hatches effect the trout’s feeding habits, and a top-of-the-water approach becomes necessary. Dry fly is classed the pinnacle of all fishing methods, although traditional wet fly fishing from a drifting boat can be tremendous fun. During the dreaded Dog Days of August, reverting back to winter tactics can pay dividends.

As the temperature drops during the autumn, Dry fly fishing can reach it’s peak with the fish switching their attention to terrestrials such as the Heather Fly and Daddy Long Legs. One last tip, watch for the late season chironomid pupae, a well-fished pupae can provide the most exciting fishing of the season.
