Flies + Hatches

Red Tag
Grayling flies with a few exceptions are small and sparsely dressed.

As the grayling fishing starts in June, the early season flies may be discounted, if close imitation is your wish, then by all means fish Olive, Sedge, Needle flies etc. But with grayling the illusion and appearance of wet/dry flies is more important. One of the most famous grayling flies is the Red Tag; this does not represent any fly but is classed as an attractor. It has long been known that grayling love a dash of red or orange in the fly.

The Klinkhammer

A family of wet flies, commonly known as Spiders, have only a silk body and a maximum two turns of hackle, but are very effective nonetheless.

With the nymphs, or Grayling Bugs, fly tying has become an artform; there are exquisite woven lifelike patterns produced, and all catch fish. However, patterns like the Killer Bug and Dove Bug, which are simplicity itself to tie, are also proven fish takers.

One fly, however, stands out as a supreme catcher of grayling. The Klinkhammer with half its body beneath and half on the surface film it is a fly that should be in everyone’s box.
