Fly-casting is one aspect of the sport and in my opinion better taught and understood when in actual fishing conditions. This is because the fly presentation is paramount, particularly when it comes to the dynamics of moving water and the problems that different currents can cause. It is not about casting a great distance. It is more about accuracy and control and a lot more interesting than standing in a field for hours. Equally important is reading the water and choosing the most appropriate fly and method of fishing it. I don’t sit on the bank and bark instructions. I’m alongside you the whole time teaching you how I would approach different types of water and the thought process behind it, in a practical, patient and relaxed manner. So far my clients have been aged from 9 to 84 years young. Here are some unsolicited comments:
“A few comments are justified on Kim Tribe. I have had some experience of expert fisherman who set themselves up as guides and instructors. Most of them are so overwhelmed by their own self-importance and arrogance as to be of little use to anyone. Kim is in a different category. He is not only excellent company on the river but he also knows his rivers and how to fish them. But he doesn’t just show you how it’s done he goes to great lengths to teach his clients how to do it as well. My few days would have been hopeless without him. I can honestly say he taught me more in two days than I have taught myself in twenty years. If anyone wants a reference, tell them to call me.” (Dave Davies to Wye and Usk Foundation.) 'Kim Tribe is one of the finest fishing guides I have come across. We have referred a large number of fishermen to him from the Wye and Usk foundation Passport scheme and they all sing his praises back to us. His knowledge of trout and grayling fishing on the Upper Wye and Usk is second to none and a day spent with him is worth months of flailing away by yourself' (Simon Evans, Deputy Director of The Wye and Usk Foundation.)

Experience

Children studying nymph life
I have fished extensively around Great Britain and particularly throughout my native Wales where I have fished for over 30 years. This has given me a good knowlege of the fishing that Wales has to offer and how it compares to the rest of the UK. In recent years I worked for The Wye and Usk Foundation as their first river-keeper and was responsible for all 30 miles of their Passport Beats, some of which I introduced.Picture on the right shows children studying nymph life from the River Usk at a recent entomology session for local schools.

Future champion
The Wye and Usk Passport is a great scheme opening up miles of fly fishing to day ticket anglers. I now act as their resident trout and grayling guide on over 60 miles of water. I have spent seven seasons fishing over 70 rivers around New Zealand which I love, but Wales is where my heart is and where I continue to live and fish. This passion for the sport secured me a place as Welsh Rivers Champion in 1994, and I was a heat winner at the World Fly-Fishing Championships in Sweden 2001.
