Tackle for sea fishing in Wales

For most beach fishing situations a Beachcaster of 12 or 13 foot, coupled with either a Multiplier reel or a large fixed spool will suffice. This rod must be capable of hurling a 4-6oz weight around 100 yards when asked. At the business end one of a number of traces can be used, from a humble running ledger, a pulley or flapper rig right up to a four hook paternoster. A grip or breakaway lead is sometimes necessary if the swell is strong, but usually a bomb lead usually does the trickLighter tackle can be used from the beach when the sea is calm, at these times a rod of 10 or 11 foot matched up with a reel will be best to cast drilled bullets of 2-3 oz into the breaking waves. A carp rod or one of the purpose built Rockhopper rods are suitable. The bait is best left to roll around covering a wider area where fish patrol in search of food. This method can be particularly effective after stormy weather when fish search out shellfish and crustaceans which have been dislodged by the waves.

If you fish from a pier, the beachcaster will do but a slightly shorter and stouter rod is best. Again, if conditions dictate it a grip lead is necessary to prevent excess movement of the rig.
