Fly
Bass Gill
Anglers in Wales are suddenly waking up to the enormous potential for sport which is to be found on their doorsteps. Throughout the summer the estuaries and bays of the Welsh coast abound with sporting species of fish – and they will all take a fly! We are rediscovering the thrills of casting a fly to schooling bass, the frustrations of sight-casting to mullet, the unstoppable dive of the pollack and the frenzy of a feeding mackerel shoal.
Good inexpensive flyfishing can be had in the sea all around the coast of Wales. Every bay and inlet has its resident shoal of mullet and all are visited at some time by migratory sea-trout and marauding schools of bass.
Any flyfisherman who has fished in a lake or reservoir already has the equipment necessary to fish for these species. It is something which can be done during a family break at the seaside. Early in the morning or late in the evening (the best times anyway), with a minimum of tackle, the holidaying angler can sneak away and be in with a good chance of excellent sport.
All you need are a few saltwater flies – reservoir lures will do, a seven or eight-weight rod and floating line, trainers and shorts and a warm summer evening. Oh – and something to carry the mackerel home in!
