Night Tactics

The tackle required is a single handed 9’6” – 10’6” rod depending on the size of river to be fished coupled to fly lines of AFTM 7 or 8. The fly lines will need to be of different densities i.e. floater, slow sink, fast sink or sink tips and leaders of 8 -12lb B.S.
Small flies at dusk, bigger as the night gets darker. While the fish are splashing about, small flies fished near the surface usually work well, but in the dead of night much bigger lures fished near the riverbed are more successful. Enigmatically, a surface lure retrieved to make a wake across a calm pool can bring sewin up from the depths on even the blackest of nights.
Fish from the bank early into dark to avoid disturbing the pools and fish the necks and the tails of pools. As the night progresses then fish deeper where wading becomes the norm to control the drift of the fly and its depth. When wading remember that you makes less disturbance wading deep than splashing about in the shallows! As dawn approaches revert back to early night techniques as fish start to move and can be caught in the necks of the pools.
