How to catch a Sea Trout in Wales

Secret Weapon
Flies in the size range 4-10 in singles or doubles are probably best for the early part of the night from dusk to 12.30 fished on either a floater or intermediate/slow sinker. Later in the night some bigger flies such as tubes, waddingtons or tandems in sizes 1” – 3” give you a better chance of success, usually fished on the slow sinker or even a fast sinker. Or try a Surface lure fished on a floating line this can make for spectacular sport.

As for patterns “anything with a silver body and a black hair wing with a bit of red hackle” will work on nearly all rivers although different localities have their own favourites.

For day fishing, small flies or mini tubes fished on a floater or slow sinking line work well with flies of size 10 and 12 fished on a two or three fly cast. Typical flies would be Peter Ross, Mallard and Claret and Teal Blue and Silver

Many would agree that flies with a flash of blue do well in the estuaries and lower reaches of rivers, while darker patters containing red are more often favoured in the middle and upper reaches, particularly in low, clear water
