With salmon stocks under increasing pressure, the Environment Agency, is seeking to do everything possible to protect the species for the future.

Catch and Release is one of the number of ways anglers can help to safeguard salmon stocks in our rivers. Anglers will be familiar with other techniques, including Bag and Size limits, close season and restrictions on method and equipment.

Most Salmon Anglers at some time return a Salmon, for example when they catch a kelt or a fish which is coloured. Some anglers return a large proportion of the fish they catch to help protect their fisheries. Catch returns for 2002 show that in Wales 41% of fish are returned alive to the river. On this page and on some of the following pages we hope to give you information on how to give your catch the best chance of survival after you have returned it to the river. By releasing Salmon carefully, enabling fish to continue on their journey back to their spawning grounds, you will be contributing to conserving this magnificent species for the future.
