Fishing for Rainbow Trout and other non Wild Trout
Diawl Bach
From the valleys of the South to the grand mountains of the North, stillwater fisheries abound profusely throughout Wales.
Although there’s still an abundance of undisturbed, wild mountain lakes holding truly wild Brown Trout, it is the put-and-take still waters that attract the majority of angling activity in the principality.
Modern lifestyles that are adopted by today’s generation have forced fisheries to adopt a ‘quick fix’ attitude, with the majority of these generously stocking the vibrant, acrobatic Rainbow Trout, which thrive due to the quality of the water. There are also Brown Trout waters that are exclusively stocked with farm bred Brownies.
Unlike the Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout do not have a close season as such. The large reservoirs such as Brenig, Clywedog and Llysyfran still close their doors over the winter months, but the small waters like Valley Dam and Tan-Y-Mynydd remain open between October and March.
The stocked still waters of Wales offer an exceptional angling opportunity amongst what is arguable the most breathtaking scenery in Europe. It is affordable, accessible and can be enjoyed by all – the majority of these reservoirs and small stillwaters have blended with their natural surroundings so well it is hard to believe they are man made!
