Cwm Hedd Lakes

Cwm Hedd Lakes offers superb fly fishing for the experienced or novice angler, in seven acres of spring fed lakes.

Location


Very accessible at only 5 minutes from Junction 28 of the M4 – Newport 3 miles, Cardiff 8 miles; half an hour from  Cardiff International airport; under two hours from London. 

Lakes

There are main and novice lakes with two accessible islands The lakes are regularly stocked - mainly rainbows, plus brownies, tigers and blues with the main lake fish ranging from 2 ½ lbs to 15lbs. Fishery record 14½ lbs.

The novice lake or ‘Lodge Pond’ is around a quarter of an acre and is very highly stocked with rainbows from 1¼ - 1¾lbs.
There are 45 well maintained platforms (including 7 platforms designed to comfortable accommodate wheelchairs), plus a wading area.

Float tubes permitted.

Opening hours

7.30 am – til dusk, Wednesday – Sunday.

Fortnightly competitions, Sundays 9am – 12 noon

Summer time, depending on water temperature


Tickets and prices

· Catch and Kill (four fish limit), from £9.00
· Sporting ticket:  kill first fish then go on to catch and release.  From £13.00 (includes the cost of the first fish).  Barbless hooks
· Concessions available
· Season tickets: 25 fish, £175.00; 50 fish, £350.00.

Comfortable lodge with wood burning stove; hot and cold food and beverages served all day, including all day breakfast.

Facilities for the disabled

Dedicated parking for disabled, next to lodge; access to lakeside from car park and lodge via tarmac pathway with handrails; seven 8’ x 6’ wooden platforms with rails, suitable for wheelchairs; wheelyboat platform; 6’ wide tarmac pathway across front of lakes’;  access to ledge via ramp; toilet facilities.

Tuition

Providing that sufficient notice is given (preferably 3-4 weeks where several coaches are required), we are able to arrange fully licensed and experienced coaches, registered with the Game Angling Instructors Association (GAIA).

Where anglers are complete novices, we recommend a ratio of one coach to four anglers; a ratio of 1-5 is acceptable where anglers have some prior experience.

Coaching sessions (2 hours am, plus 2 hours pm) include

o An introduction to angling and Cwm Hedd Lakes
o the setting up of equipment
o tuition in fly casting and the principles of fly fishing
o information on entomology

In addition to tuition, coaches will supply rods, lines and flies.

Directions

Grid reference ST 2686. From Junction 28 of the M4, take the A467, signposted Risca and Brynmawr. Take the 2nd exit at the next roundabout (in Bassaleg), towards Caerphilly on the A468.  Bear left at the mini roundabout (Tredegar Arms pub), then left before second set of traffic lights.  Continue for around half a mile on this road: the second farm driveway on the right is Cwm Hedd Lakes/ Croesheolydd Farm.
