Coarse Fishing Rigs

USEFUL BASIC RIGS FOR WELSH FISHERIES

Rigs - those bits of gear on the end of your line that make first contact with a fish - are as varied as human ingenuity can imagine. Choice of what to use is a minefield of confusion and wonder mixed with a large dollop of mystery to many, if not most anglers, though few are prepared to admit this. Check out what the anglers on any popular fishery are using for proof of this: some will be casting out cluttered collections of ironmongery, while others use little more than a baited hook. Yet all will probably net fish one way or the other, particularly those prepared to chop and change if things don’t work out after the first few tries. What is successful one day often proves utterly useless the next - a fact of life anglers learn to live with.

Choosing the correct end-tackle for the day is a combination of luck and experience. Specialist anglers may have a case for using a junkyard of bits and pieces on the end of their lines and a couple of tons of groundbait to land huge hauls of specimen fish - but is this really necessary for the average pleasure angler? Of course not! Besides, a collection of unnatural, brightly-coloured debris surrounding the bait will make most fish nervous—except carp; they’re not very bright at the best of times. When it comes to the crunch most pleasure anglers are quite content with a nice bag of fish and a pleasant day at the waterside without having to lug along a lorry-load of high-tech gear. To achieve this end, the linked rigs are offered as an easy and basic way to enjoy your Welsh coarse angling without getting too stressed-out. The trick is to keep things simple; you can always experiment by adding an extra weight here or a longer length of line there, etc, until you end up with something that works fairly consistently for you - the combinations are endless. Just keep your rig assembly to a minimum and you’ll avoid a lot of head-scratching and unnecessary expense. Gadgets that appear super-efficient rarely live up to their promise.

Whatever you want to catch, there will be a simple, basic rig here for you, so make your selection accordingly. Now click on one of the links to make your choice and remember - keep it simple!
